National Merit Cum Means Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) is a scheme that the Central government launched in India. Who is not eligible for the NMMS Scholarship?
The scholarship is not available to the below category of students.
i) Students studying in the boarding/residential schools run by State Government Institutions.
ii) Students already availing of any other scholarship/stipend from Central or State Governments.
iii) NVS, KVS, Sainik Schools’ Students are not eligible.
iv) Students studying in schools located in the areas notified by Central or State Governments as ‘Left Wing Extremism Affected Districts.’
v) Other than the students mentioned in (i), (ii), (iii), and (iv) above, all other students are eligible for the scholarship.
A student who has secured more than 55% marks or equivalent grade in Class VII may not be considered for the scholarship.
What are the Eligibility Criteria for Renewal of NMMS Scholarship?
- To renew the scholarship for the second year onwards, a student should have secured not less than 60% marks or equivalent grade in Class X Examination.
- The scholarship awardee must get clear promotion from class 11 in the first attempt with a score of 55% marks or equivalent to receive the scholarship in class 12.
- The percentage of marks or equivalent grade Relaxation for SC/ST students shall be 5%.
What is the NMMSS student selection process?
The selection of students for the award of scholarship is made based on marks secured in class VIII annual examination.
A student who fulfills the eligibility criteria must pass both the tests, i.e., Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) under NMMSS with at least 40 % marks in aggregate taken together for these two tests. For the SC/ST students, this cut-off is 32% marks.
Mental Ability Test (MAT):
This test measures the students’ reasoning abilities and critical thinking through 90 multiple-choice questions. Most of the questions may be based on analogy, classification, numerical series, pattern perception, hidden figures, etc.
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT):
This test covers various subjects like Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Language. There are 90 multiple choice questions in this test.

The selection is made from students who have passed both the tests, i.e., Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) under NMMSS.

What is NMMSS’s amount, and how does it pay?
The scholarship amount is Rupees Twelve Thousand (Rs. 12,000/-) per student per annum payable in two installments of Rs. 6000/- each directly into the State bank of India (SBI) bank account of the beneficiary students. The scholarship rate has been enhanced from Rupees Six Thousand (Rs. 6,000/-) to Rupees Twelve Thousand (Rs. 12,000/-) per year, from 1 April 2017.

What is the NMMS Scholarship Amount?
If you have qualified for National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship and qualify for the scholarship, open a joint bank account with your parents. NMMS Scholarship amount will be credited to that Joint Bank Account only.
